So I mention a few times across this website how all of the candles made are made with Soy wax. You might be wondering 'why are soy wax candles better?' and that is the reason I've created this post to give you more of a detailed background into why soy candles are better and why all the candles on this website are created with soy wax. (not biased at all, hehe).
Soy wax is a vegetable wax made from the oil of soybeans. After harvesting, the beans are cleaned, cracked, de-hulled, and rolled into flakes. The oil is then extracted from the flakes and hydrogenated.
Paraffin wax is commonly used in candles, but soy candles are another option on the market. While soy candles look and smell similar to their paraffin counterparts, they offer distinct advantages. Not all soy candles are created the same way, however. While some limit unnecessary chemicals, others include additives or are blended with paraffin wax. Read the label or ask the manufacturer if you are unsure of the ingredients in the candle.
Benefits of Soy Wax
Soy Wax Delivers a Cleaner Burn
Unlike paraffin wax, which gives off black soot when burned, soy wax burns cleaner. Since paraffin wax is petroleum-based, burning it produces a black soot that can potentially stain curtains, walls, and carpets inside the home. As a vegetable-based wax, soy wax does not give off any harmful by-products that might cause damage.
Soy Candles Burn For Longer
Soy candles burn slower and up to 50% longer than regular candles, making them the more cost-effective option in the long-term. Soy candles are known for burning more evenly than regular candles also (when the wick is kept trimmed to a quarter of an inch) leaving little to no excess wax on the sides of the jar. That is why, I can confidently say my burn for 35-40 hours even though they might be smaller than other candle brands such as Yankee Candles due to using Soy Wax.
Soy Wax is Environmentally Friendly
Since soy wax is made from soybeans, it is friendly to the environment because soybeans are a renewable resource. Paraffin wax comes from petroleum, which is not a renewable resource. This is especially important if you are pregnant, have kids, or have pets, because it’s the safest option health-wise. You want to avoid wax blends or candles that don’t state the exact breakdown of ingredients.
Soy Wax Scents are Stronger
Because soy wax burns cleaner than paraffin wax, the scent from its essential oils is more pleasant and stronger-smelling than the chemical scents added to paraffin. It’s common to hear people complain of headaches when paraffin candles burn, but in general, this isn’t due to the scent of the wax but rather the toxins it releases into the air. Soy wax offers many benefits over paraffin wax—some of which most people don’t even realise. Along with soy wax creating a stronger scent, I use essential oils in all of wildest dreams candles to make the scent super strong and have holistic healing properties!
Overall, Simply put, soy wax is better. Better for the environment, better for the home, better for the family and creates a better performing product - which is important to us and hopefully important to you. I really hope this post was informative and know you feel like a true candle expert. If you're interested in finding out more how I got started making candles then find out here.
